Position Paper on a Health Issue
Public Health and Social Justice Paper
NURS 472/473- Community Health I & II
Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to allow the student the opportunity to complete an analysis of a public health issue from a social justice perspective.
Student Approach to Assignment
During my nursing experience, I was involved in didactic and clinical experiences where I was presented with a multitude of social, political, and environmental issue regarding public health. One issue that seemed to disproportionately effect the members of the community I was working with was access to insulin medications. Thus, when approaching this assignment, I decided to investigate an issue that I was constantly inconstant with in the clinical setting.
Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio
This required assignment is relevant for inclusion because it shows my ability to objectively investigate a public health issue as it is relevant to nursing. It also shows my ability to hold a position on an issue and advocate for what is morally just to my policy makers. Furthermore, it demonstrates my ability to use critical thinking to help solve a complex issues.
Critical Thinking
Engages in creative problem solving
Example: In the purposed action portion of my paper, I explain actions that should be taken towards mitigating the issue of lack of availability to insulin. Being that knowledge deficit was identified as a primary reason legislation is not voted for by the public, I suggest a social and local media campaign to spread awareness. This would include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others. The information provided would be clear on the issue, how many people are affected, and how to help i.e vote. The local campaign is explained as flyers, kiosk, and local news reporting on the same information. Furthermore, in appendix A of my paper, I wrote a letter to Martin Baron Editor of The Washington Post, that explains the issue, why it is relevant, and urge him that he use his platform to educate others on the importance of voting on this issue.
Culture
Considers the impact of research outcomes and the effects of health and social policies, on persons from diverse backgrounds
Example: In this paper, I investigate research behind insulin availability in the United States and consider how advocation for policy change can impact those who cannot afford medication. For example, I mention how research suggest that 1 out of 4 insulin dependent diabetic cannot afford their medications. Thus, this leads to the patients choosing to go without medications, so that they may afford other necessities such as food and rent. Furthermore, I explain the negative health impacts of going without exogenous insulin such as neuropathy and blindness.
